I am NOT AN ENGINEERING STUDENT!

I am NOT AN ENGINEERING STUDENT!

The other day when i attended a function, there were people all around,a lot many of them strange to me and I strange to them. Thanks to the occasions like these, people 'manage' to 'find' some time out of their 'hectic' schedules to fake a couple of smiles to their dearer ones! There were handshakes all around and few smiles were exchanged as a matter of formality! As i was watching all these 'artificial' moments from close quarters and as i was trying my best to fake a couple of smiles,i felt a pat on my back, which actually was too strong to be called a pat! I was introduced to someone new to me and after I let the 'stranger' know my name, the expected question popped out in the conversation,"what are you doing?". The 'stranger' meant to ask about the academical course that i am pursuing and without any reluctance i replied with that smile still on my face,"B.SC (computers)" and snap! What i got in reply was a blend of expressions that were so intense! Those expressions contained so many questions that were virtually asked! When I de-coded them,I realised that the bamboozled and bewildered 'stranger' was looking at me as if he meant to ask me "You are not pursuing B.TECH?! Then what,on earth, are you up to?"! While i made all these interpretations in the C.P.U  of my body, I still managed to grin wondering if ENGINEERING is the only way to go after completion of intermediate!
Many Indian students and their parents seem to be looking no further than engineering. That reminds me of horses whose eyes are covered side wards so that they don't look any where else other than what's infront! Not taking into consideration whether a student is actually interested in engineering or not,the parents of students get their children enrolled in engineering colleges and what ensues there after is a burdensome engineering phase. It's like when someone asks a student about what he/she is doing, they mean to ask about the branch of engineering that one has opted for and when they realise that someone is not an engineering student, they look at that person as if he/she has come from the planet "PANDORA" in James Cameroon's "AVATAR"! The "ENGINEERING MANIA"  is soaring up so much that one shouldn't be surprised if someone says pursuing engineering after completion of intermediate is a universal truth just like the fact that the sun rises in the east!
That reminds me of a post that i have read on facebook which says that Indian students initially become engineers and then decide what they would like to be in the future!
Whenever i find myself in the situations like the one that i have mentioned earlier, the inner me roars inside "You all laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at you because you all are the same!" and only had it been heard outside will things have been different. Having said all this, I don't mean to criticise the field of engineering or the ones choosing it! There will be some who choose it out of passion and to them i mean no harm. And if you are one of them, I know you must be fuming fire right now but let me ask you to gulp down some ice cold water because this is the truth and it is a bitter pill to swallow.
Let me tell you again
"I am NOT AN ENGINEERING STUDENT!"
So, big deal?!
